Automating Microsoft Excel with Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) involves the programmatic manipulation of the objects inherent in Excel, such as worksheets, charts and pivot tables. In VBA, each of these objects has properties and methods which can be used to manipulate the object and make it do what you need it to. Properties are the attributes or characteristics that the object possesses, whereas methods are actions associated with the object. For example, a workbook has a "name" property and an "open" method.

In this article, we will look at Excel selection techniques which involve using the mouse in conjunction with the keyboard. One of the most useful is click followed by Shift-click. This is particularly useful for selecting large ranges of data since it allows you to simply click on two opposite corners of the rectangular range of cells which you want to highlight. To use this technique, first click in the top left cell of the range you want to highlight. Next, scroll to make the bottom right cell of the proposed range visible. Finally, hold down the Shift key and click on the bottom right cell. All the cells between the two cells that you have clicked on will now be highlighted.

The COUNTIF function enables us to count the number of cells in a given range which satisfy a condition. COUNTIFS does exactly the same. However, with COUNTIFS, we can specify multiple criteria. For instance, let's say we have a worksheet containing four columns: the date, the number of phone calls received, the number of complaints and the percentage of calls which were actually complaints.

Microsoft Excel offers a number of different ways of changing the width of columns and the height of rows. The width of columns is expressed in characters. By default, each column has a width of just over eight characters. This means, for example, if you're using the spreadsheets primarily for numerical data, you can enter eight digits in each column using the default width.

In Microsoft Excel, row height is measured in points, the same units used to measure font size. When printing reports this makes it easy to relate the height of rows to the required line spacing. This means that it is possible to increase the line spacing by simply increasing the height of your rows.

Each time new cells are inserted into a worksheet, existing data has to shift in order to make room to the newly inserted cells. When one is inserting entire rows or columns the direction in which data will be moved is predetermined. If one inserts an entire column, existing data is shifted to the right. If one inserts an entire row, any existing data is shifted down. However when we are inserting cells rather than entire rows or columns Excel needs to ask us in which direction we want the existing data to be shifted: to the right or down.

Excel boasts a huge range of functions which are conveniently arranged into categories. The COUNT function is found under the statistical category. There are actually five COUNT functions; COUNT, COUNTA, COUNTBLANK, COUNTIF and COUNTIFS. We will look at COUNTIF and COUNTIFS in another article. In this article, we will examine COUNT, COUNTA and COUNTBLANK.

Most Excel users have encountered the SUM function. It is one of the most widely used functions within the program. And most Excel users will also have used the IF function at some stage. The SUMIF function is really just a combination of SUM and If which allows us to calculate the total of all cells within a given range that match a certain condition.
